Historical Background

Brentford Football Club was founded in 1889 and is based in Brentford in Greater London. The club has also been referred to as 'The Bees', since some particularly vocal members of the crowd chanted 'Buck up, Bs' (which was the chant of Borough Road College) to encourage their friend and Brentford player Joe Gettins. That incident took place in the mid-1890s, but the nickname stuck, and has even inspired the design of the club badge.

Brentford had several homes in the early years of its existence but has been based at the Griffin Park football ground since it opened in 1904. The club has plans to relocate in to a new Brentford Community Stadium when its construction, which began in 2017, is completed.

The Bees currently play in the English Football League (EFL) Championship, but have also played at the top tier. Fans are always keen to see Brentford in the football TV listings, and those who aren’t patient enough to wait for televised games can enjoy their team in action via Brentford live streams.

Club Badge and Colours

Brentford have had several badges over the decades, and as mentioned earlier, the Bees nickname has influenced their badge design. The first badge to feature bees was introduced in the early 1970s, and the current badge features a central bee against a white background. A red outer circle bears the name of the club in white lettering, as well as the year of its formation, 1889.

Brentford’s home strip consists of a white shirt with vertical red stripes, black shorts with white vertical lines on the outer legs, and black socks with white horizontal stripes. The away strip comprises brown shirt, shorts and socks, with white and orange embellishments.

Key Players and Managers

The Head Coach at Brentford F.C. is Thomas Frank, who was appointed as an assistant coach in December 2016 and promoted to his current position in October 2018. Past managers include Dean Smith, Mark Warburton, Uwe Rösler, Andy Scott and Fred Halliday.

Key former players for Brentford include Alan Judge, Clayton Donaldson, Toumani Diagouraga, Charlie MacDonald, Marcus Bean, Lloyd Owusu, Carl Hutchings and Jamie Bates.

Key players on the current Brentford squad include captain Romaine Sawyers, forwards Said Benrahma and Sergi Canós, midfielders Lewis MacLeod and Kamohelo Mokotjo, defenders Henrik Dalsgaard and Rico Henry, and goalkeeper Luke Daniels.

Honours, Noteworthy Stats and Memorable Moments

  • Winning the league at the second tier in 1935. The team also finished as runners-up on four occasions, most recently in 2014.
  • Winning the league at the third tier in 1933 and 1992.
  • Winning the league at the fourth tier in 1963, 1999 and 2009.
