Historical Background

Cardiff City, or as they are known as in Welsh, Clwb Pêl-droed Dinas Caerdydd, are one of just 6 Welsh teams playing in the English football leagues. They are also currently the highest ranked after gaining promotion back to the top-flight football last year. As such, this year, Cardiff City fans have had to opportunity to watch their team play via Premier League live streams and in the Premier League TV listings. The last few months of the football on tv matches this season will crucial to see if they survive for a second season.

Formed in 1899 as Riverside, they changed their name to Cardiff City in 1908 and joined the English Football League in 1920, so next year they will be celebrating 100 years as part of that system.  During that time, they have been fairly consistent in their performances and have spent 17 seasons in the top-tier of the football league, which includes a 9-year continuous stint there in the ’20s.

Outside of this, they have seen glory in cup competitions. They have won the Welsh Cup 22 times and the FA Cup once in 1927, the only non-English team to have done so, and appeared at three different cup finals since. Their biggest most recent success was gaining promotion the Premier League in 2017/18 season and lifting the EFL runners up trophy which was enjoyed by many fans watching on football live streams and football on tv channels.

Key Players and Managers

Neil Warnock has been in charge of The Bluebirds since 2016, thus he was responsible for their most recent return to the Premier League. A key player to their team is Sean Morrison, who has been the Cardiff's captain since Warnock took over, proving his worth by leading them to a runner’s up position and promotion last year.

Kits, colours and crest

Cardiff is a recognisable team, when they play premier football on tv by their light blue and white kit. Their emblem boasts the same colours, as well as a Bluebird, where they take their nickname from.

However, there was a brief stint when this changed. Their current chairman, who has been in the role since 2011, Vincent Tan has been quite a figure in their recent history. At one point, he changed Cardiff's kit, who had been playing in blue for decades and are known as "The Bluebirds", to red in 2012. This prompted outcry and anger from fans and was eventually changed back.

Stadiums

Their stadium, The Cardiff City stadium, is second largest stadium in Wales, second only to another Cardiff-based stadium, The Millennium Stadium. It plays host to both Premier League on TV matches, as well as international football on TV matches, as it acts as the home stadium to The Welsh National team.

Noteworthy Stats and Memorable TV Moments

While their greatest achievement was probably becoming the first non-English club to win the FA Cup, this was long before football on tv was a thing. As such, their appearances at 2008 FA Cup Final against Portsmouth and the 2012 Football League Cup Final against Liverpool, must be up for as the best football on tv moments for their team. Even though they lost both.
