Albania vs Spain: Match Preview

When the new 24-team tournament format was introduced back in 2016, there’s a lot more to play for right up until the final moments of the group stages. As it stands, all teams in Group B still have a chance to qualify for the knockouts.

As previously mentioned, Spain are already through after dispatching of Croatia by three goals to nil. Despite the score line, there are reasons to believe that their narrow 1-0 win over Italy was even more impressive due to the resilience displayed at times. With six points in the bag, Spain will likely rotate the squad, which could give the Albanians a big boost in their bid to qualify. That said, a draw won’t be enough and they must get all three points to go through.

After scoring the fastest goal in EURO history against Italy, Albania ultimately lost 2-1. Against Croatia, the team held the lead for a long time but saw the Croatians turn the game around in a few minutes. Celebrations were cut short, with Albania equalising in dramatic fashion late on in the game.

As a result, Albania now need to defeat Spain, a task that is probably up there with the most challenging in football. With two goals conceded in both games so far, Albania need to find a way to tighten up defensively to keep the Spanish threat at bay.

It remains to be seen how much Spain will actually go for the win, considering that qualification is already a certainty and that they are expected to make a few changes. Albania will also rejoice in the fact that aside from resting players, Spain will also be without Rodri after he picked up another yellow card against Italy. One less world class player for Albania to worry about.

Key Players: Albania vs Spain

Spain’s 16-year-old Lamine Yamal has been one of the standout performers of the tournament so far. Providing an assist in the opener against Croatia, Yamal has been heavily involved in a lot of Spain’s attacking build-up in both games. Albania will need to devise a plan to keep him quiet.

As for Albania, keep an eye out for midfielder Qazim Laci, who currently plays for Sparta Prague. Laci got a goal against Croatia and was the best player on the pitch. Laci will need to bring the best out of himself and his teammates if Albania have any hope of progressing.
