Southgate to Make Several Changes?
Gareth Southgate has received plenty of scrutiny for his team selections so far in this tournament, favouring the likes of Connor Gallagher in midfield instead of players who are perhaps more naturally suited to playing in a double pivot, such as Mainoo or Wharton. Being this far into a tournament without yet knowing what midfield pairing suits the team best is not an ideal scenario.
Moreover, Southgate has also insisted to keep Phil Foden out on the left wing, instructing him to stay as wide as possible, which is not his game and has therefore caused him to struggle greatly and fade out in games. Fans and pundits have instead called for Chelsea star Cole Palmer to come into the side after his stellar debut season where he showed the ability to win games on his own.
Whether Southgate makes these changes or not remains to be seen. However, he will need to think of a way to inspire his side and get the best out of a group of players performing well below their standard. At the very least, Luke Shaw has now been tipped to make a return to the side, giving England a much more natural option on the left hand side which could influence their attacking play.
Slovakia Qualify from Third Spot
Slovakia managed to get out of Group E by beating Belgium whilst being massive underdogs, and then managing to see out a draw against Romania, who finished first in the group. Slovakia will notice just how much England struggle against low block opposition, with star players Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka all being completely nullified by tight defences.
Only conceding 3 goals in 3 games, they could pose a threat on the counter against an England side who are struggling to score goals so far. We think they’re likely to set up in a low-block and make things difficult. Gareth Southgate and his side would arguably put it a better performance against more attacking sides like the Netherlands as they have yet to find the winning formula when coming up against lesser opposition.
