Preview for Germany vs Hungary

It’s David vs Goliath on paper, but the Germans should not underestimate a Hungary side who have beaten several big teams in recent years. Let’s take a look at the two teams and highlight some key players.

Germany – Current Form & Key Players

Germany automatically qualified as hosts for EURO 2024, so they haven’t had as much competitive action as other sides in the build up to this tournament. However, they began their EURO campaign with a flyer by smashing Scotland 5-1 on the opening day, and will look to build on that impressive display on matchday two. It won’t be easy, though, as the Germans have failed to beat Hungary in each of the last three meetings.

Still, Germany look strong already and have gained momentum at the right time with confidence-boosting wins against France and Holland in the months leading up to the tournament. Julian Nagelsmann has a good mix of youth and experience at his disposal, which is reflected in a strong midfield consisting of Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan, and Florian Wirtz.

Hungary – Current Form & Key Players

Hungary, on the other hand, will not be intimidated by the challenge and will even feel that a victory is possible going in. Not only did they manage to go unbeaten in the qualifiers, but they also beat Germany away from home in the 2022/23 Nations League. Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai is their main man, but keep an eye on striker Barnabas Varga, who has scored six goals in 11 games for his country and won the Golden Boot in Hungary’s top-flight in each of the last two seasons.
