Netherlands With a Late Winner

It was a real struggle for the Netherlands in their opening Group D match against Poland in Hamburg. The Poles took the lead after a quarter of an hour, but Gakpo equalized after half an hour. The match swung back and forth, but ‘Oranje’ secured the victory with a late goal from Weghorst.

Starting the group stage with three points was extremely important for Koeman’s squad, especially with tournament favourite France as their next opponent. Now they can enter the match against France with less pressure, not having to worry about their biggest star, Kylian Mbappe.

Beating the French would be a massive statement from the Netherlands, who would ensure top spot with a win. Will they be able to capitalise on Mbappe’s absence?

Mbappe Blow for France

France struggled to a 1-0 victory against Austria in their first match of the tournament. The performance was not the most convincing, and to top it off, star player Kylian Mbappé ended up with a broken nose. As a result, Mbappe will miss the remaining two group stage games.

Didier Deschamps will have a decision on his hands as to who should replace him, with Olivier Giroud perhaps being the most natural choice. This is obviously not an ideal situation for Les Bleus in the build-up to the game which is likely to decide the group winner. Can Giroud roll back the years and win the game for France?
