Spain Could Make History

Two of the tournament favourites in Spain and France gave us a contest to remember during the semi-final in Munich on Tuesday night. Despite going a goal behind early on, Spain yet again showed their resilience and patience, along with a moment of magic from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal to inspire a comeback.

Yamal already held the Euros record for being the youngest player to play in a European championship, as well as being the youngest player to grab an assist, but his curling effort has instantly shot him to stardom, with many now calling the young Spaniard the next generational talent in world football.

The Spanish national team will now play in their fifth Euros final, and they have the opportunity to set a new record with a fourth title. The last time they reached the final was in 2012, when they beat Italy 4-0. Is this the beginning of a new golden generation for Spain?

England With Another Late Comeback

England have been their own worst enemy so far at EURO 2024, after going behind in all three knockout rounds, and leaving it late to secure their progression. That said, they look like a side that has been slowly growing in terms of their performances and attacking fluidity, with a much better display against the Netherlands. England have also been defensively resolute in every game, something which was a concern before the tournament began.

The heroes this time around came off the bench, with Gareth Southgate finally making aggressive, albeit still reactive, changes with Watkins and Palmer replacing Harry Kane and Phil Foden, with the pair combining for the winner to send England to Berlin. As mentioned, England were much better in this game with the change in formation working wonders for them allowing the likes of Phil Foden to excel.

This will be England’s very first final in a major tournament not played on home soil and their second Euros final in a row. They’ve already made history under Southgate, but anything other than a win on Sunday night will be seen as a massive disappointment by everyone involved.

The Road to The Final

Spain certainly had the tougher route of the two sides on the way to the final, having to get past favourites and hosts Germany, as well as a star-studded France team. Despite that, they got pushed to extra time just once in all three knockout rounds. England, on the other hand, required extra time and penalties against Switzerland, as well as extra time against Slovakia. Spain will also have an extra day of rest and preparation ahead of the final, setting this up for a thrilling occasion on Sunday night.
